Bridging Science and Community: My Internship Experience at Jnetics

by Devorah Moise, Summer Intern

During my summer internship at Jnetics, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in meaningful work that directly impacts the community. Jnetics, an organisation, dedicated to raising awareness and preventing Jewish genetic disorders, offers vital services that bridge the gap between complex and scientific knowledge, and public understanding.

At Jnetics, my main responsibilities included developing an e-learning platform aimed at educating students in schools and universities. This platform serves as an interactive resource to spread knowledge about genetic disorders and their prevention. I also wrote comprehensive leaflets and reports for individuals who tested positive for genetic conditions, offering them accessible information and guidance on available options.

This internship has been an amazing learning experience, enhancing both my technical and soft skills. I learned how to distil complex scientific concepts into clear, engaging content for lay audiences. Additionally, observing the fundraising effort and day-to-day operations of the organisation provided me with a holistic view of what it takes to run a successful charity.

One of the most inspiring aspects of my time at Jnetics was witnessing the impact of the NHS Jewish BRCA Testing Programme. This initiative aims to raise awareness about BRCA gene mutations prevalent in the Jewish community, which significantly increase the risk of certain cancers. My involvement included designing infographics to increase awareness and participating in meetings with genetic counsellors. The programme’s holistic approach, which includes connecting individuals with healthcare services and providing counselling, underscores the organisation’s commitment to supporting those at risk.

Working at Jnetics has given me a profound appreciation for the planning and sensitivity required to communicate scientific concepts effectively. I have seen first-hand how crucial it is to approach genetic health issues with both empathy and precision, ensuring that individuals feel supported throughout their journey.

Overall, being at Jnetics has been an enriching experience that has solidified my passion for public health and education. It has been an honour to contribute to projects that not only inform but also empower individuals facing genetic health challenges. As I move forward in my career, I will carry the lessons from my experience at Jnetics with me, striving to make a meaningful impact in the field of public health and medical communications.

If you are, as I am, moved by Jnetics’ mission, consider donating to fund their essential programming. Together, we can empower individuals, educate communities and create a future where genetic health is better understood and supported.
