Getting Tested

To be eligible for testing you need at least one Jewish grandparent.

Recessive Carrier Testing

Jnetics offers carrier testing (sometimes called carrier screening) for 47 of the most severe recessive Jewish genetic disorders (JGDs) This is done via The Jnetics Clinic and the Jnetics on Campus and Jnetics in Schools programmes. Optional testing for a 48th condition, Fragile-X, is offered for female participants of the clinic only. Carrier testing is an essential first step in ensuring that you do not have a future child who is affected by one of the severe JGDs covered.. A full list of the disorders covered by Jnetics screening can be found here.

NHS Jewish BRCA Testing

NHS England is now offering free BRCA gene testing for anyone living in England, aged 18 or over with at least one Jewish grandparent. BRCA gene testing identifies individuals who have a BRCA gene mutation and are therefore at increased risk for several cancer types.  Those identified as ‘BRCA positive’ through genetic testing are eligible to access services offered by the NHS to manage their increased cancer risk. It is now internationally recommended that anyone of Jewish ancestry is offered BRCA gene testing due to the significantly increased prevalence of BRCA mutation in the Jewish population.
