Peir (Promoting Excellence in Rabbis) hosted a professional development seminar on the subject of ‘Genetics in the Jewish Community’ on 21st June 2011. The well-attended seminar focused on some practical and halachic issues associated with inherited disabilities or illnesses in the Jewish community.
Talks were given by religious, scientific and clinical experts including Dayan Chanoch Ehrentreu, Professor David Latchman and Rabbi Julian Shindler.
Providing the clinical perspective, Sara Levene, a genetic counsellor at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital and member of the Jnetics scientific and medical advisory committee, talked about ‘Genetic diseases in your community: Challenges and choices for families’.
The informative and thought-proving talk was well received and led to an interesting discussion among attendees.
